Fetilizers Europe β Decarbonisation Fertilizers, 2050
Summary
Fertilizers Europe, an association representing fertilizer companies in Europe, has set ambitious goals for decarbonizing the fertilizer industry.
By 2026, all member companies will have a plan in place for decarbonizing their assets. By 2040, these companies commit to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions from scope 1 and 2 by 70% compared to 2020 levels. And by 2050, European fertilizer production aims to be climate-neutral. To achieve these goals, a combination of policy solutions and access to affordable, low-carbon, and renewable energy is necessary. This transition to a climate-neutral economy by 2050 is crucial to ensure the competitiveness of the current fertilizer assets while also enabling the production of climate-neutral fertilizers. Fertilizers play a vital role in ensuring food security for all and strategic autonomy for Europe, as they are essential for global food production. Currently, nitrogen-based fertilizers are mainly produced using natural gas, but efforts to reduce the carbon intensity of fertilizer production have been made. However, more needs to be done. The European fertilizer industry is already investing in low-carbon and renewable production processes to decarbonize fertilizer and food production and contribute to the EU's transition to climate neutrality.
