WEF & Accenture Food System, 2023
Summary
The World Economic Forum (WEF) and Accenture have collaborated to create the WEF & Accenture Food System, 2023 report. The report highlights the need for a shift in approach to nutrition science and recommends a diet that focuses on minimally processed, plant-forward, fiber- and bioactive-rich foods while considering cultural characteristics.
The New Frontiers of Nutrition initiative aims to coordinate global efforts to make nutritious food choices more widely available and adopted by 2035. The report identifies three desired outcomes for creating a health-centered food system: increasing the availability of healthy and nutritious foods, developing systems for affordable and accessible delivery of these foods, and supporting consumers in making nutritious choices. To achieve these outcomes, the initiative has identified five strategic levers for intervention. These levers include promoting the production of diverse and nutrient-dense foods, reformulating unhealthy processed foods, making nutritious food more affordable and accessible, creating a retail environment that prioritizes nutritious choices, and connecting consumers with the link between food and health. The initiative has also identified two action platforms for public-private collaboration: Portfolio Innovation and Measurement, and Frontier Business Models. Progress in these areas will be monitored and reported in future publications.
