World Bank – International Prices and Food Security, 2024

Summary
The Central American region, consisting of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, and the Dominican Republic, is currently facing a food security crisis. In recent years, there has been a sharp increase in food insecurity, with over 40 percent of the population in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras classified as moderately or severely food insecure during the COVID-19 pandemic. A significant portion of the population in these countries reported running out of food in the previous 30 days, indicating a worsening situation compared to pre-pandemic times. This report examines the relationship between domestic food security in Central America and global price inflation, including the impact of international food and fertilizer prices on household expenditure and income. It also assesses the effectiveness of government policies in addressing high food prices and draws lessons from past instances of international food price hikes to guide policymakers in preventing and responding to food security crises in the region.
