BFI β The Adoption of ChatGPT
Summary
The study explores the adoption of ChatGPT, a form of Generative AI, among workers in Denmark through a large-scale survey experiment combined with register data analysis.
Half of workers across 11 occupations have used ChatGPT, with younger, less experienced, higher-achieving, and predominantly male workers leading in adoption. Despite seeing productivity potential in ChatGPT, workers face barriers such as employer restrictions and required training. Informing workers about expert assessments of ChatGPT influences beliefs and intentions but has limited impact on actual adoption. The widespread adoption of ChatGPT signifies a significant technological milestone. Age, experience, and gender influence adoption patterns, with less experienced and higher-achieving workers more likely to use ChatGPT. Workers anticipate ChatGPT to reduce working times in some tasks but do not expect significant cross-task substitution initially. Varying perceptions of time savings correlate with actual use of ChatGPT, hinting at the role of individual beliefs in adoption. The study aims to understand the factors driving adoption patterns and how ChatGPT affects different workers in various occupations.
