Fletcher & Nielsen β Generative AI and News Audiences
Summary
The authors conducted an online survey in six countries to study the public's use and perception of generative artificial intelligence (AI) products, with a focus on ChatGPT.
They found that while ChatGPT is widely recognized and used, daily use is rare and it has not yet become a routine part of internet usage for most people. Additionally, a significant minority of the public in the surveyed countries are not aware of popular AI tools. Younger people are more likely to use generative AI regularly, with 56% of 18-24 year olds reporting use of ChatGPT compared to 16% of those aged 55 and over. Participants reported using generative AI for a variety of purposes, including creating media and accessing information, but only 5% said they used it for gathering the latest news. Overall, the study highlights the prevalence of generative AI awareness and usage, particularly among younger demographics, but also indicates a need for further integration and understanding of these AI tools in daily life.
