GSMA – Combatting Forest Fires With AI in Pakistan

Climate change is causing an increase in natural disasters such as forest fires, which have devastating effects on wildlife and vulnerable populations. Artificial intelligence is proving to be valuable in forecasting and detecting these disasters early on. In Pakistan, a country highly susceptible to natural hazards, the recent Sherani forest fire highlighted the need for improved forest fire management systems. By integrating AI technology, Pakistan can better predict, detect, and respond to forest fires, ultimately mitigating their occurrence and preventing catastrophic events. This includes analyzing data to predict fire risks, detecting fires quickly through image analysis, and coordinating resources efficiently to protect communities and wildlife. Strengthening Pakistan's forest management system with AI has the potential to significantly reduce the impact of forest fires and protect local communities from future disasters.
