Global Energy Monitor - China, 2023
Summary
China has emerged as a global leader in renewable energy, accounting for nearly half of the world's wind and solar capacity. The country's renewable energy development is widespread, with projects present in every province, particularly in the northern and northwest deserts where large wind and solar bases have been established. These bases have a capacity greater than that of the United States' combined wind and solar capacity and will play a crucial role in China's renewable energy expansion and overall energy security strategy. China's success in renewable energy can be attributed to a combination of incentives and regulatory measures. However, to maintain its leadership position, China aims to address the intermittent nature of wind and solar power through innovative approaches. The country has plans to install a significant amount of additional capacity by 2025, surpassing the government's target and greatly increasing global installations. Nevertheless, despite these efforts, coal-fired power stations continue to be constructed alongside renewable energy projects, suggesting that further action is needed to completely phase out coal as a power source.
