IEA β Clean Energy Investment for Development in Africa
Summary
The authors of the IEA report highlight the crucial need for affordable and sustainable energy in Africa to drive economic and social development.
Despite rich energy resources, millions of Africans still lack access to electricity and rely on traditional, inefficient cooking methods. The consequences are severe for health, education, and overall development, particularly impacting women and children. However, increasing investment in energy systems is challenging, with Africa attracting only a small fraction of global energy spending. Barriers such as a lack of viable projects and high capital costs, especially for renewable energy initiatives, hinder progress. Furthermore, overlapping crises like debt distress in many African countries and higher interest rates make it even harder to attract new investment. To address these challenges, there is a critical need to boost investment in clean energy projects and overcome obstacles to help Africa harness its energy potential for sustainable development.
