IEA – Global Energy Review, 2025

Summary

The main theme of the report is the analysis of trends in the energy sector for 2024, including data on all types of fuels and technologies, regions, and major countries, as well as energy-related carbon dioxide emissions.

In 2024, global energy demand grew faster than average, leading to increased demand for all energy sources, including oil, natural gas, coal, renewables, and nuclear energy. The growth was mainly driven by the electricity sector, where electricity demand increased almost twice as fast as overall energy demand. Almost all of the growth in electricity demand was met by low-emission sources, particularly due to record expansion in solar photovoltaic capacity. CO2 emissions in the energy sector continued to rise, but at a slower pace than in 2023, thanks to the rapid deployment of clean energy technologies.
