IRENA actively engages with its Members to assist in the development of climate commitments, such as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Agreement.
Since 2020, IRENA has supported 102 countries through 240 activities, impacting a population of 6 billion people and total greenhouse gas emissions of 31,984 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2eq). The current round of NDCs, NDC 3.0, provides a crucial opportunity for Parties to enhance their climate change mitigation targets and align them with the outcomes of the First Global Stocktake, part of the UAE Consensus agreed at COP28. IRENA offers technical recommendations for energy sector components of NDCs, cost-effective climate change mitigation options, grid flexibility analyses, energy data and statistical analysis, anad capacity building to support countries in achieving their climate goals. As the Custodian Agency overseeing progress toward tripling renewable power capacity and doubling energy efficiency by 2030, IRENA plays a key role in promoting the adoption of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and low-carbon technologies in national plans.
