IRENA – Decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors, 2024
Summary
The goal of the Paris Agreement is to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5°C by 2050, requiring the decarbonisation of all sectors.
However, certain sectors like heavy-duty trucking, shipping, aviation, iron and steel, and chemicals and petrochemicals are harder to decarbonise due to various challenges. These sectors account for a significant portion of global energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Renewable energy and energy efficiency are key to reducing emissions in these sectors. IRENA's report for the 2024 Italian G7 Presidency highlights the importance of accelerating the energy transition in these hard-to-abate sectors. It examines the current decarbonisation status, pathways, and challenges, providing recommendations for the G7 to establish the necessary conditions for implementing solutions. The report emphasizes the pivotal role of the G7 in driving global decarbonisation efforts in these critical sectors.
