IRENA β Energy taxonomy, 2024
Summary
Renewable energy, particularly solar and wind power, has become increasingly important in global energy discussions and policies.
However, there is a lack of standardized data and methodologies for comparing renewable energy statistics across countries and time periods. IRENA has identified this issue and is working with countries and institutions to improve the measurement and tracking of renewable energy generation and consumption. The current international energy classifications are not adequate to incorporate new and future energy systems, and more detailed standards are needed to ensure accurate and comparable data for decision-makers. IRENA is advocating for updates to the International Recommendations for Energy Statistics to address these challenges and enable meaningful insights and informed decision-making in the energy sector.
