IRENA – Energy transition in Africa 2024

IRENA's report highlights the critical importance of energy in Africa's development, with renewable resources abundant but energy access lacking for three-quarters of the population due to insufficient investment. The G7 has the opportunity to collaborate with African countries to address these challenges, responding to the call to action in the Nairobi Declaration on Climate Change. The goal is to increase renewable capacity in Africa from 56 GW in 2022 to 300 GW by 2030, aligning with global goals to triple renewable energy and double efficiency by the end of the decade. Priority areas for collaboration include investment in infrastructure, expanding energy access, managing critical minerals for the energy transition, and strengthening institutional frameworks.
