IRENA - Renewable Energy and Jobs, 2023
Summary
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the number of global renewable energy jobs increased to 13.5 million in 2022, up from 12.7 million in 2021.
Asia is the region with the highest number of renewable energy jobs, with China accounting for 41% of the global total. The solar photovoltaic (PV) sector is leading the way in job growth, representing more than one-third of the renewable energy workforce. Additionally, 40% of these jobs are held by women. Direct jobs in hydropower also saw a slight increase in 2022, with almost two-thirds of these jobs being in operations and maintenance. Jobs in the biofuels sector mostly exist within the agricultural supply chain. In the wind power sector, China and Europe are leading, but component production is becoming more diverse geographically. IRENA highlights the importance of decentralised renewable solutions for providing reliable power and employment opportunities in remote areas. They also emphasize the potential for millions of additional jobs in the renewable energy sector, particularly with the implementation of comprehensive and ambitious policy measures. Industrial policy plays a crucial role in building and strengthening local capacities and securing job creation benefits. Workforce development and diversity are key factors in ensuring a smooth energy transition, and efforts should be made to tap talent among under-represented groups. Labour rights and social dialogue are essential for a just transition that protects workers' prospects. Finally, achieving the energy transition requires faster deployment of renewables and broader systemic changes that move beyond unsustainable economic growth.
