IRENA – Tripling renewable power by 2030
Summary
IRENA is focused on tripling renewable power capacity by 2030 as a key metric of achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement.
The Agency's World Energy Transitions Outlook shows that while this goal is challenging, it is achievable. In 2023, there was a significant increase in global renewable capacity additions, particularly in solar PV. However, capacity additions in other renewable power options still need to accelerate to meet the 1.5°C pathway and achieve the 2030 target. Enabling policies and proven success stories can help countries accelerate new renewable power capacity additions, leading to benefits such as increased energy security, economic prosperity, and lower climate and health costs. The G7 will play a crucial role in driving this global effort, by expanding renewable power capacity, addressing deployment barriers, and supporting emerging economies in meeting their contributions to the tripling goal.
