Ammonia is a valuable resource in various industries and is often transported by sea, but its safe use as a maritime fuel requires a focus on handling and use in critical locations such as ports and vessels while protecting human health and the environment. Unlike traditional fuels, ammonia is toxic when inhaled, rather than highly flammable, so safety management must shift focus to toxicity. Safety measures for ammonia include design and engineering practices, inspection and maintenance regimes, leakage detection and isolation, containment of liquid, and emergency procedures. This publication, based on industry best practices and experience from ammonia bunkering trials in Singapore, aims to help readers prepare for and respond to ammonia releases by providing information on safety protocols and risk mitigation strategies.
