UN β Resourcing the Energy Transition: On Critical Minerals Towards
Summary
The global climate crisis is worsening, with extreme weather events becoming more frequent. To limit temperature rise and meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, a global energy transition is necessary.
However, this transition requires critical minerals like copper, cobalt, and lithium, which are currently in high demand. Responsible mining practices are needed to avoid human rights abuses and environmental damage. Developing countries with access to these minerals have a significant opportunity for economic growth. The United Nations has established a Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals to develop principles for a sustainable energy transition. Respect for Indigenous Peoples' rights and intergenerational equity are essential in this process. Collaboration between governments, businesses, and civil society is crucial to manage mineral value chains effectively. The transition to renewable energy must be done in a way that promotes peace, security, and human rights for all.
