WEF – Green Hydrogen Enabling Measures Roadmap for Adoption in India

Summary
The World Economic Forum (WEF) has released a roadmap called "Green Hydrogen Enabling Measures Roadmap for Adoption in India" to help India meet its growing energy demand and achieve its commitment to net zero emissions by 2070. India is currently the third-largest economy in the world in terms of energy needs, and its demand for energy is expected to increase by 35% by 2030. However, the country's reliance on traditional energy sources is leading to a rising energy import bill, which was $185 billion in 2022. To address this, the Indian government launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission in early 2022, aiming to promote green hydrogen production and consumption through $2.3 billion in incentive funding. Currently, most of India's hydrogen supply is grey hydrogen, which is produced using fossil fuels and emits CO2 gas. The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to produce 5 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) of green hydrogen by 2030, equivalent to half of India's projected overall hydrogen demand. However, there are challenges in expanding green hydrogen in India, including the cost of production and delivery, as well as the readiness of industries to consume green hydrogen. The WEF report proposes five goals to accelerate the adoption of green hydrogen in India, including achieving cost-parity of $2/kg of hydrogen with grey hydrogen and creating incentives for industries to consume green hydrogen.
