The main theme of the report is the performance of global nuclear energy in 2024.
In 2024, global nuclear reactors produced a record 2667 TWh of electricity, surpassing the previous record of 2660 TWh set in 2006. Construction began on nine reactors in 2024, with six in China, and one each in Pakistan, Egypt, and Russia. Seven reactors were connected to the grid, including four in China and one each in France, India, UAE, and the USA. Four reactors were decommissioned: two in Canada and one each in Russia and Taiwan, China. At the end of 2024, there were 440 operational nuclear reactors worldwide with a total capacity of 398 GW. The average capacity factor for the 410 reactors that generated electricity in 2024 was 83%, up from 82% in 2023. The report includes case studies on reactor construction and operation in China and the United Kingdom.
