World Bank - Net Zero 2050 for Copper Nickel
Summary
The Net Zero Roadmap for Copper and Nickel Mining is a report aimed at guiding the transition of copper and nickel mining value chains to net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. It proposes clear actions and intermediate goals for achieving this transition, taking into account the broader ecosystem, including environmental, social, and governance impacts, policy challenges, and access to sustainable finance. The report takes into account the global energy transition (GET) and recognizes the critical role that copper and nickel mining and metals play in the GET. The demand for these metals is expected to increase significantly, and securing their long-term and consistent supply is a risk to the GET. The report argues that business-as-usual copper and nickel production processes are carbon-intensive and could increase GHG emissions, delaying the GET and preventing the achievement of net zero emissions. Therefore, copper and nickel mining value chain actors need to align their metals supply with the Paris Agreement.
