World Population Prospects 2022
Summary
The United Nations has released its World Population Prospects 2022 report which states that the average number of children per woman is expected to decrease globally. This decrease is due to a variety of factors such as access to education, family planning, and changes in cultural norms. However, immigration will remain the main contributor to population growth in developed countries. The report highlights that the projected growth in global population will largely be driven by countries in sub-Saharan Africa, which will account for more than half of global population growth in the next three decades. The report further indicates that aging populations will continue to be a challenge for countries as fewer working-age people have to support more elderly individuals. In these circumstances, countries need to adopt policies that encourage fertility and immigration as a means to address the issue of aging populations. The report highlights the need for policymakers to use population data as a tool to inform their decisions and to ensure sustainable development that benefits people and the planet.
