ADB β E-commerce Evolution in Asia and the Pacific: Opportunities and Challenges
Summary
ADB's report highlights the growing importance of e-commerce in the global economy, with Asia and the Pacific leading the way.
Factors such as increased smartphone usage, convenience, and evolving technology have contributed to the growth of the e-commerce market. The region is expected to account for 61% of the global total by 2025. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the digitalization of economies in Asia and the Pacific, resulting in increased online retail demand. However, there are still barriers and challenges to e-commerce adoption, such as lack of internet access, limited e-payment platforms, logistics and delivery issues, and inadequate legislative and regulatory mechanisms. Least developed countries face the biggest challenges in digital readiness, with limited internet access and ICT infrastructure. Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises also struggle due to resource limitations and disruptions caused by the pandemic. Women are underrepresented in the digital economy, facing legal and financial constraints that hinder their access to credit. Despite its potential environmental benefits compared to traditional retail, e-commerce still contributes to emissions due to its rapid expansion. The report suggests that legislative measures and technological advancements can help mitigate these environmental impacts.
Overall, the report emphasizes the opportunities and challenges presented by e-commerce in Asia and the Pacific, and the need for comprehensive strategies to ensure inclusive and sustainable growth in the region.
