European retail and wholesale companies play a crucial role in reducing the region's carbon footprint, with 98% of their emissions coming from their vast supply chains. While progress has been made in adopting sustainable practices, there is still a need to address Scope 3 emissions. New climate-related legislation, such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, will require companies to disclose their Scope 3 emissions from suppliers and consumers. However, there is a lack of standardized methods for quantifying and reducing these emissions, leading to inconsistencies and inefficiencies. It is crucial for the sector to accelerate decarbonization efforts and work towards standardization to effectively reduce their carbon footprint and meet the EU's emission reduction targets.
