WEF β Nature Finance and Biodiversity Credits
Summary
In December 2022, 196 countries pledged to halt biodiversity loss by 2030 through the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).
To achieve this, ambitious nature-related policies are needed. Private financing for nature has increased to $102 billion in 2023, but a $700 billion annual gap remains. Businesses must create nature-positive strategies that combine conservation with financial success. They should also develop nature finance action plans that prioritize actions based on both nature and financial benefits, use metrics to measure outcomes, and implement financing mechanisms with integrity. The WEF report provides guidance on how to develop and implement these strategies, focusing on biodiversity credits as a potential tool to fund conservation and drive systemic change.
