IDMC - GRID 2023 Global Report on Internal Displacement

The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) has released its GRID 2023 Global Report on Internal Displacement, which focuses on internal displacement caused by conflict and violence. The report shows that there were 55 million internally displaced people (IDPs) globally in 2020, with 17 million new displacements reported that year alone. Sub-Saharan Africa was the most affected region, with over 20 million IDPs. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated displacement, with measures such as lockdowns leading to a surge in domestic violence and forced displacement. The report also highlights the disproportionate impact of displacement on women and girls, who often face gender-based violence and are forced to become heads of households, experiencing economic and social difficulties. Finally, IDMC emphasizes the need for better data collection and analysis of IDP movements, and recommends the implementation of durable solutions for IDPs, including the provision of adequate housing, livelihood opportunities, and access to education and healthcare.
