Oxford β Global climate diplomacy, July 2024
Summary
The Bonn Climate Conference and G7 conference in June provided insight into global climate diplomacy leading up to COP29 in Baku in November.
The Bonn conferences set the stage for COP by focusing on key issues and preparing for updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and a New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) for finance from developed countries. Money, meeting Paris Agreement targets, and adaptation to climate change were major topics, along with negotiations on Article 6 and implementing recommendations from the Global Stocktake. Progress was also hoped for on the Loss & Damage Fund. Following the conferences, the G7 leaders were expected to provide further direction on climate and environmental issues and climate finance negotiations. Observers were eager to see if developed nations were willing to address the need to meet climate targets and support investment in a just energy transition in developing countries.
