United Nations – A Positive Trade and Environment Agenda for the BRICS

Summary
The BRICS countries, which include Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, have seen significant economic growth in recent years, with their combined GDP making up a large portion of the world's output. However, this growth has also led to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions, although on a per capita basis, their contribution is still lower than that of developed countries. In order to address climate change, it is important for all countries to work together based on the principles of the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals. However, some developed countries, such as the European Union, have implemented unilateral measures, like the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which imposes carbon tariffs on imports based on their carbon emissions. These measures are projected to have a small impact on reducing emissions but will significantly affect energy-intensive exports from the BRICS countries to the EU. The implementation of CBAM could lead to a decrease in real income for the BRICS countries, making it more challenging for them to achieve their climate goals. As the impacts of climate change continue to worsen, the costs of adaptation are becoming increasingly high. Successful climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies require economic diversification, technological progress, and robust finances. The BRICS economies have the potential to leverage their environmental conditions, trade, and finance to support other developing countries. This paper evaluates the trade and financial interactions within the BRICS countries and the global south. It emphasizes the need for growth models that align with each country's capacities and promote green industrialization and structural transformation. There is a call for increased cooperation between BRICS members to overcome financial and technological constraints, integrate climate change mitigation and adaptation plans, and invest in physical and social infrastructure.
