European Commission – Mapping of Technology Infrastructures Supporting Clean and Renewable Energy Industries

The European Union has set ambitious targets to become a climate-neutral economy by 2050, with the clean and renewable energy industries (CREI) sector playing a crucial role in meeting these goals. This report provides a detailed mapping of technology centres and the Technology Infrastructures they host across the EU, supporting the development of seven key CREI technologies. These technology centres are essential for advancing CREI technologies, providing critical support for validation, prototype demonstration, and system integration. The analysis highlights regional correlations between the number of technology centres and companies active in CREI technologies, emphasizing the importance of these centres in fostering industry development. However, there is a notable concentration of Technology Infrastructures in certain regions, indicating an innovation divide across the EU. The report also showcases specialization patterns in specific CREI technologies at both national and regional levels, with varying technology readiness levels (TRLs) supported by different types of Technology Infrastructures. Overall, the study underscores the vital role of technology centres and their infrastructures in supporting the growth and innovation of the CREI sector in Europe.
