Oxford – Can Hydrogen Technology Help in Decarbonising the coal power

The global energy-related CO2 emissions reached a new record high in 2023, with coal playing a significant role in the increase. The power sector, where coal is the primary source of electricity, remains the leading emitter of greenhouse gases. Asia, specifically China and India, has a large number of coal plants in operation, emitting a substantial amount of CO2 annually. Despite some coal plant retirements and cancellations in the past years, there are still plans for new coal plants in the region. In order to tackle the emissions from the coal power sector, it is important to explore alternative fuels such as hydrogen technology. This could potentially help in decarbonizing the coal power sector and reducing the overall emissions from the largest GHG emitter.
