Summary
The third report in the X-Change series, titled "Batteries," has been produced by RMI in collaboration with the Bezos Earth Fund.
This report is part of the Systems Change Lab initiative and aims to analyze the rapid growth of renewable energy technologies. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing the significant progress being made in various sectors of the global energy system. RMI's report focuses on the exponential growth of battery sales, which is fueled by a domino effect of battery technology adoption. This phenomena causes the demand for batteries to increase from one country or sector to another. The report suggests that this battery domino effect could lead to more than half of global fossil fuel demand being phased out. Additionally, batteries play a crucial role in reducing emissions in transportation and power sectors, bringing us closer to achieving a zero-carbon energy system. The success of batteries is attributed to a reinforcing feedback loop between market scale, cost, and quality. As the battery market expands, the unit cost decreases and the quality improves. This feedback loop prompts the adoption of batteries in different sectors. The journey of batteries began in consumer electronics and has since expanded to motorbikes, buses, and cars. Currently, batteries are being integrated into stationary electricity storage and trucking systems. By 2030, they are expected to be used in short-haul ships and planes. The spread of battery technology is not limited to a single geography; successful innovations quickly transcend borders. The adoption of batteries in the automotive market, for example, was spearheaded by early adopters like China and is now gaining momentum worldwide, from Europe and the United States to Southeast Asia and India. As the domino effect progresses, batteries are projected to become the largest clean tech market globally, surpassing wind turbines and solar panels. However, this transformation did not occur without concerted efforts from companies, governments, researchers, and climate advocates. Continued growth in the battery industry will require ongoing dedication. The path for batteries is clear, but collective action is necessary to traverse it successfully.
