WindEurope – Maximising the power of wind through grid flexibility

Clean energy transitions are gaining momentum in Europe, with a focus on increasing the share of electricity in the energy mix to 75% by 2050. Wind power, along with other clean energy sources, is essential for decarbonizing the energy system. However, the variability of wind power presents challenges for system operators in balancing supply and demand. To address this, a focus on flexibility is needed, with flexibility requirements projected to increase significantly in the coming years. The report explores various levers to meet flexibility needs, including supply and demand side options, battery storage, and active grids. Technology enablers such as digital technologies and power electronics, as well as policy and regulation, are also crucial in providing flexibility. Cross-border interconnectors play a key role in increasing power system flexibility and integrating renewables. Rapid deployment and scaling of available clean energy technologies, along with innovative business models and policy approaches, are necessary for the successful integration of renewables and ensuring energy security in Europe.
