In 2022, the European Union saw a 1% growth in the passenger car fleet, totaling over 252 million cars, with Romania experiencing the highest increase.
The EU also has 30.2 million vans and 6.5 million medium and heavy commercial vehicles on its roads. Greece and Estonia have the oldest car fleets, while Luxembourg has the newest cars. Italy has the oldest van fleet, and Poland has the largest truck fleet. Electric cars make up only 1.2% of the total EU car fleet, with diesel still dominant in light commercial vehicles, trucks, and buses. Poland has the highest car density in the EU, while Cyprus has the highest density of commercial vehicles and buses. Latvia has the lowest car density, while Lithuania and Germany have the lowest density of commercial vehicles and buses. Nearly 43% of households in Latvia do not own a car, while 31.3% of French households have two passenger cars. The average annual distance traveled by vehicles in the EU is 12,540 kilometers.
