KAPSARC – Decarbonizing Road Freight Transportation in Saudi Arabia

The study explores possible pathways to reduce emissions in the freight sector using the GCAM-KSA model. Key findings include the need to transition to electric freight rail, improve fuel efficiency of heavy trucks, and adopt zero-emission vehicles. To achieve emission reduction goals, the report suggests replacing trucks with electric railroads, implementing fuel economy standards for heavy trucks, adopting zero-emission vehicles, and introducing carbon taxes. By 2060, CO2 emissions from land freight are expected to decrease to 29.4 million tons.
