KAPSARC – Decarbonizing Saudi Arabia’s Transportation: Insights from LCA Case Studies

The main theme of the report is the decarbonization of Saudi Arabia's transportation sector using life cycle assessment (LCA).

Key findings include: The transportation sector accounts for about 22% of Saudi Arabia's total greenhouse gas emissions. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) significantly reduce emissions with the current energy mix. Hydrogen and battery electric drives offer greater emission reductions when using renewable electricity. In maritime transport, liquefied natural gas (LNG) can reduce emissions by about 10% compared to heavy fuel oil. Green hydrogen has significant potential for emission reduction, but there are barriers such as infrastructure, onboard storage, and cost. A comprehensive approach to decarbonization is needed, including informed policy interventions and targeted investments in low-carbon energy infrastructure.
