WEF & Accenture – Jobs of Tomorrow GenAI, 2023

The World Economic Forum (WEF) and Accenture have released a white paper titled "Jobs of Tomorrow GenAI, 2023", which explores the potential impact of large language models (LLMs) on the job landscape. LLMs, such as GitHub's Copilot, Midjourney, and ChatGPT, are rapidly advancing forms of generative artificial intelligence (AI). These tools are predicted to cause significant shifts in global economies and labor markets, coinciding with ongoing labor market upheaval from various forces. The Future of Jobs Report 2023 by WEF predicts that 23% of global jobs will change over the next five years due to industry transformation, including advancements in AI and text, image, and voice processing technologies. To assess the impact of LLMs on jobs, the white paper analyzes over 19,000 individual tasks across 867 occupations. It identifies tasks with high potential for automation, augmentation, and those unaffected by LLM adoption. Findings reveal that routine and repetitive tasks have the highest potential for automation by LLMs, while abstract reasoning and problem-solving tasks are more likely to be augmented. Jobs with a lower potential for exposure to LLMs require a high degree of personal interaction and collaboration. The paper also identifies new job roles emerging from the adoption of LLMs, such as AI Developers, Interface and Interaction Designers, and AI Ethics and Governance Specialists. Industries with the highest potential exposure to LLMs include financial services, information technology, and media, entertainment, and sports. Function groups with the greatest potential exposure are information technology and finance. Overall, the report suggests that implementing LLMs may not lead to job displacement but rather a transformation of occupations. Proactive strategies will be crucial in preparing the workforce for these "jobs of tomorrow." The findings aim to provide valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and business leaders in navigating the impact of LLMs on the job market and preparing for the future workforce.
