Energy Statistics India, 2023

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) in India has released an introduction to Energy Statistics India in 2023. The document highlights the importance of energy in human evolution and development, from the early use of fire and animal power to the present use of electricity and sustainable fuels. It notes that lack of access to reliable and clean energy is a barrier to improving human well-being worldwide. In response to concerns about greenhouse gas emissions, there has been a push for renewable energy as a solution to poverty and global warming. To effectively analyze a country's energy situation, it is necessary to compile energy statistics for a better understanding and to guide sustainable development. Energy statistics cover various aspects, including extraction, production, distribution, trade, and consumption of energy products, as well as the characteristics and activities of the energy industries. Energy resources include non-renewable energy sources discovered in the earth's crust, while energy reserves are resources that can be recovered and extracted to some extent based on technical, economic, and environmental considerations. Energy products refer to goods and services that result from energy production, with a focus on those exclusively or mainly used as a source of energy. This includes forms of energy suitable for direct use and those that release energy during chemical or other processes. Primary and secondary energy products are distinguished for analytical purposes. The description of the universe of energy products in energy statistics can be complex, and countries often follow the International Recommendations on Energy Statistics (IRES) for delineation. The United Nations Statistical Commission has adopted IRES as a statistical standard, providing a comprehensive framework for the collection, compilation, and dissemination of energy statistics in all countries. The document concludes by noting that the recommended unit of dissemination for main categories of energy products, according to IRES, is still to be determined.
