Methane emissions are responsible for around 30% of the increase in global temperatures since the industrial revolution.
Rapid and sustained reductions in methane emissions are key to limiting near-term global warming and improving air quality. The energy sector, including oil, natural gas, coal, and bioenergy, accounts for over 35% of human-caused methane emissions and has significant opportunities for reductions. The Global Methane Tracker provides the latest estimates of emissions by sector, based on satellite data and measurement campaigns, and discusses various mitigation options and associated costs. The 2025 update includes new elements such as historical emissions data at the country level, an interactive tool to explore international methane initiatives, and assessments of emissions from abandoned fossil fuel sites. It also offers full open access to the model for exploring emission reduction options in the oil and gas sector.
