Strategy β Fusion Energy
Summary
The current rate of global renewable energy development is not sufficient to achieve emission-free energy supply by 2050 and meet the Paris climate targets.
However, fusion energy could be the solution to this problem. The rapid commercialization of fusion energy, combined with the fastest possible expansion of renewables, could make the goal of net zero emissions by 2050 achievable. Countries around the world are now positioning themselves in the race to be the first to successfully commercialize fusion energy. In Germany, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has published a strategy paper on fusion energy in June 2023. Germany's position in the field of academic research is strong, but it is at risk of falling behind in terms of entrepreneurship. Therefore, bold action is necessary for Germany to seize the potential of fusion energy. A national strategy on fusion energy could not only ensure Germany's success in this field but also turn fusion into an economic engine for the country. The time is critical, and Germany must act now to secure its position in the fusion energy revolution.
