Summary
The Global Exploration Roadmap Supplement of October 2022 provides an updated version of the exploration strategy for international collaboration among space agencies, which was first introduced in 2018. Since then, many space agencies have renewed their focus on the Moon, leading to the creation of an updated Lunar Surface Exploration Scenario in the 2020 GER Supplement. This 2022 Supplement outlines the latest mission scenario and architecture for human and robotic lunar surface missions, preparatory activities for Mars, and scientific priorities for the Moon. It also integrates renewed and emerging national plans and commercial capabilities among participating countries. The Supplement encompasses a set of 12 lunar exploration objectives and a step-by-step development of increasingly capable lunar transportation systems to the lunar surface in three phases. The scenario depicts a sustained presence on the lunar poles and analogues in preparation for human missions to Mars. These efforts are not only geared towards exploration and knowledge acquisition, but they also drive innovation and economic growth, creating opportunities for private investment and job creation. The Supplement also accounts for developments such as commercial payload delivery services, in-situ resource utilisation, communication and navigation systems and lunar transportation, surface power, and dust mitigation technologies that will benefit science and academic communities.
